The Colonial Middle School Project was a significant undertaking located in Plymouth Meeting, PA, within the Colonial School District. The project aimed to construct a new 232,000 sq. ft. middle school, which was approximately 42,000 sq. ft. larger than the existing building. The new facility was thoughtfully designed to accommodate up to 1,500 students, providing a modern and spacious learning environment for the community.

Challenge

While the new school was being built, the previous middle school would remain untouched until completion at which point it would be demolished. To accommodate for space, land previously owned by Central Montco Technical High School and the Township had to be utilized. With this, the project faced challenges such as unexpected ground rock impeding progress on underground plumbing issues. This necessitated a reevaluation and careful adjustments of systems to finalize installation.

Further, this project faced multiple delays and supply chain issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Deliveries of equipment were delayed, person-power allowed on site became an issue, and the deadlines began to be pushed back making the completion timeline, particularly in the HVAC and plumbing contracts, unsure.

Solution

MYCO’s commitment to the cutting-edge of technology shined on this project as the Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) team was able to build a full 3D model of the new build for coordination of underground pipe, anchors, hangers and beyond. This also allowed for a fast and efficient adjustment around the ground rock issue, keeping teams moving and on track.

Installation was streamlined through the in-shop production of plumbing carriers, cast iron sanitary pipe, and stormwater piping. Hot-water and cold-water piping for boiler rooms were also produced in MYCO’s Production and Innovation Center to allow for improved efficiency, safety, and to help navigate person-power concerns caused by the pandemic.

To further accommodate for the pandemic, the HVAC team went through a three-month period of accelerated shifts to maintain deadlines and schedules for the project. This commitment to overcoming delays was a shining example of MYCO’s teamwork, logistical excellence, and efficiency.

Sucessful Outcome

Through everything, construction came together excellently for these HVAC and plumbing contracts. Even in the face of a global pandemic, MYCO was able to successfully complete this state-of-the-art new learning facility in a timely manner all while keeping excellence in craft at the forefront. As a testament to the implementation of advanced technology, team coordination, and the team’s adaptability, the new Colonial Middle School Facility will provide a lasting positive impact on the district and surrounding community.
